An inferno that occurred in the late hours of Thursday has destroyed fruits and other valuable items at the popular Fruit Market at Kaduna Street, in D-line area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The caused of the fire has not been ascertained, but traders attributed the huge loss to delay by fire fighters to arrive at the scene.
Some youth who were rioting, prevented the Fire Service from carrying out their responsibility.
However, Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State, has declared that the state government will come to the aid of the affected traders.
The governor, who described the incident as a great loss to the state, said the state government will rebuild the market in no distant time.
He said: “Government will do what it is supposed to do to ensure that the traders continue to earn a living. It is unfortunate that this has happened. We will look at the immediate and remote causes and we shall also come to the aid of those who are affected by the inferno. Let me assure you that we will do what we can to resolve it.”
The governor called for the cooperation of the traders, and pleaded with them to remain calm.
According to Wike, although the Fire Service responded late, they should have been allowed to salvage what they could.
